Who's in the driving seat of your life?
We have lots of roles in our life.
You might be a
Friend, employee, child
Sibling, parent, partner...
These are all external though.
But how about internal roles?
Parts of ourselves within our own psyche.
A shy part, and an expressive part.
A rational side, and an intuitive side.
A kind inner voice, and a critical one.
Which internal aspects of your being
Can you recognise?
And most importantly...
Which of those parts of you
Is the boss?
Which voice speaks the loudest?
Carl Jung, a famous psychologist,
Spoke about sub-personalities.
Different aspects of our character.
Let's say there's a part of you
That wants to be self-employed.
But another part of you
Opposes that.
The Inner Entrepreneur
Wants freedom, meaning, adventure,
Is light, trusting and optimistic.
The Inner Realist
Wants security, financial stability,
Is rational and risk-averse.
And then what?
We're stuck.
Decision paralysis....
Inner conflict,
Doubt,
Insecurity,
And it's so exhausting.
We all have an "Inner Gremlin",
A part of us that's holding us back,
Sabotaging our dreams,
Keeping us safe, but small.
The idea is not to get rid of it,
To overrule it,
Or to ignore it.
No, no, nothing like that.
With my clients,
I befriend this part.
We get to know it
Understand what it needs
Invite it for a symbolical cuppa tea.
Because once it's seen, heard
And truly understood,
It's often obvious that that part of us
Means well.
It's probably protecting us from pain.
But it has simply gone overboard.
It's likely to be the voice
Of an internalised caregiver
(like a parent or teacher).
But completely grown out of context.
Sooo
What can you do
To overcome this inner conflict?
From stuck to taking your life
In a meaningful direction
With these four coaching steps:
STEP ONE
Determine the two opposing forces
That are fighting for space inside of you.
STEP TWO
Give them both a description
Like "the frightened/critical part of me"
And the "happy/free part of me".
Interestingly,
Many call this one "the real me".
STEP THREE
Get two pieces of paper
And for each of them (separately)
Write down memories
When this force was active in your life.
Note down the thoughts, feelings & actions
Of each of these parts of you.
This will help you be more aware
& more conscious of their presence.
STEP FOUR
For each upcoming decision
Notice who's in the driving seat.
If your life is a journey
And you're travelling by car
Which part of you
Is deciding the destination?
Which part is hidden in the trunk,
In the passenger seat,
Or forgotten many miles ago?
Which part of you is the boss,
Behind the steering wheel of your life?
And does that bring you happiness?
Or asked differently,
Does your current strategy work for you?
These four profound steps
Increase awareness
Of sabotaging habits and
Help you take the right decisions.
May it bring happiness
To yourself and those you love.
